Actually, as long as the ends are taped up properly, I've never observed much of a difference between the hose and the final brass crooks.

There used to be a gimmick (as in Monette, et al - [sorry, Monette fans]) trumpet mouthpipe out there with some name like Picsnskzc (sorry - ' don't remember the guy's name...I'm making fun of ME not REMEMBERING his name, and not fun of his name per se.) or something. Those mouthpipes actually had hard "steps" in their tapers rather than being tapered smoothly from the mouthpiece size up to the bore size of the instrument. He made all sorts of claims about how those pipes helped everything from intonation to arthritis.

I wrote him a letter once asking if he made any SQUARE-shaped mouthpipes with steps, because my sound was too round...

...He never answered my inquiry.
