Rich Matteson played a bit off-center, on the advice of his father, due to irregularities in his teeth. I find sometimes that the red ring is a good thing because it tells me if I have accidentally let the mouthpiece placement drift off a bit from the center. For me it's usually good to bring it back. However, I have noticed that a pianissimo high F works better for me when I shift over a bit.
