The peg fit into a carrying harness, that's right. Here in Norway the band of the Kings Guard use a device close to a carpenter's belt. The weight is thus distributed evenly around your hip. No pain to the spine or shoulders that way. Quite ingenious, but I don't know where to get hold of this device. It's probably british made like the instrument.
(Besson made tubas without this peg earlier on. F.x. the EEb tuba in "concert" version. Today I guess you have to order the peg specifically. New tubas don't have that feature anymore).
