You might know, that much of my free ensemble music is constructed, so that it can be played of the most diverse mixed ensembles.

Yet I will say this about 4 or 5 part ensembles with one player on each part: The more homogeneous the instruments the better!

That means, that a trombone is a way better substitution for the horn, than is a tenor saxophone. And if the baritone player you mentioned in your first posting has a good command of lover dynamics all over his/hers range, the baritone is an even better substitution for the horn than is a trombone.

You should go for the best sound result, even if that implies some writing out of one or more transposed parts.
