Most auto "lacquers" used nowadays are really polyurethane varnishes (e.g. DuPont Imron). Way too thick for instrument use. If you use an auto painting shop, make sure that they use nitrocellulose lacquer. You may have to deal with a shop that specializes in restoration. Many shops will refuse to work in nitro lacquer as it's explosively flammable. (Nitrocellulose was used in munitions in the 19th century--it was known as "guncotton").

Another source is any shop that specializes in refinishing electric guitars. Believe it or not, the top-of-the-line finish on these things is colored nitrocellulose lacquer.
