Admittedly, I teach in a rural high school that is far removed from any urban scene, but I find that my students who are above average intelligence tend to listen to oldies that their parents listen to far more that anything on the contemporary music scene. I am amazed at the number of students who like Chicago, BS&T, 60's soul and R&B, the Allman Brothers, Hendrix, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, country, and so on. Sometimes I even hear kids singing show tunes to themselves (I know, it's hard to believe). The ones who listen to a lot of rap tend to be kids who have had less exposure to good music, or ones who are far more interested in the social scene than learning. Very few of my high-smarts students have a strong interest in rap; if they have a more rebellious streak, they tend to listen to contemporary metal.
