On the French Horn, there are people who play quite well with an "upside down" embouchure, that is, one that is 1/3 - 2/3 instead of 2/3 - 1/3. What works for an individual has a lot to do with teeth and face structure.
On the other hand, it can take an entire year to change your embouchure; if your teacher cannot convince you why what you are using will cause you to not reach your potential, then we are back to the "find a teacher you trust" thing.
