Brian,

With all due respect, let me share an experience. When I was given the "time to join band" speech in sixth grade, I was told by the middle school band director that "girls play flutes, clarinets, or trumpets." I wanted to play string bass and tuba... I was not allowed. (Needless to say I switched schools the next year.) My physical make-up might not be such currently that is "conducive" to the biggest, strongest tuba playing, but that is what hard work is for. Look at the females out there in the euph-tuba world... is it possible some of them started on flute or clarinet??? (Maybe "little girls" want that because that is the stereotype someone along the way introduced them to? Maybe they are afraid anything else is not acceptable?)
I'm in grad school now, as a tuba player, and yes I am working on air issues... however, I don't think it is necessary for me to jump ship because I only have 2.5 L lungs.

I just wanted to respectfully disagree with you on that point.
