Playing various brasses this less than humble amateur happens to diverge with the verdict from the tuba Olympus.

In a pinch I had to warm up without any brass equipment, when rushing between very diverse teaching assignments.

I have been able to "play" fairly well in tune on the bare lips. Still can do so, if I concentrate very much.

When using a mouthpiece I could do some very low range buzzing, that should not be possible at all according to a person making a very good living out of playing brass.

Bassically (to stay within our common range) I consider the airpath/lips the sound generator, the mouthpiece the pick-up/"microphone", and the tubing the amplification/PA system.
