I think that if you are able to buzz on the rim, you are probably too tight already. If you blow a relaxed stream of air through relaxed lip muscles, there shouldn't be any sound on the rim unless you are aiming for really high notes. I use the rim for embouchure placement and examination, but not for free buzzing. The lips need the resistance of the MP or the horn to vibrate and still be relaxed.
