Always behind the beat...

I've recently heard a tape of a group I play with and discovered that I was always slightly behind the beat. I believe my tempo was equal to the tempo of the other players, but just a bit late.

I suspect the time lag is due the latency between when I initiate a note and when it the sound is actually produced. I was wondering if the better players just "anticipate" the down beat or become more "efficient" and have a much shorter time lag between the mouth piece and the bell?

Thanks for your insight...
