I would suggest two things for cleaning your instrument;
first, make a "green" type of cleanser by using a couple of cups of white baking flour, enough white vinegar to make a malable paste, and a teaspoon of salt.
Rub the resulting paste all over your instrument. Wait about ten or fifteen minutes.
Rinse all the paste off with water. Most of that browness should be gone, and you should have clean, shiny brass!
If that doesn't remove all the tarnish, then I'd move on to a great non-abrasive solvent-based item called "Nevr-Dull". It's a "Magic Wadding Compound" and can be found in any automotive supply store. All you do is pinch off a piece of wadding and rub it on your instrument. Then take a lint-free clean cloth and polish the area up to a shine!
Post some pictures, why dont'cha.
