Though I'd chime in on this one--
So, call me a prude, old timer, non-fun, whatever. There's just something, well, sacreligious about this thing. I thought it was pretty funny, until I thought about it. I saw the throwing contest in Australia, and the one in Finland. In Finland it was at least out over water, so no real damage was done to the instrument (it had been stripped down--no valve mechanism, etc.)
The bottom line is this, though--there were more people from the community standing around watching a tuba being thrown in the water than there were in most of the other events happening at ITEC 2001. What does that really say about us? Are we not musicians performing at a very high artistic level? Isn't that the kind of respect we'd like to have? OR is it just all a spectacle that doesn't mean much?
