In addition to olituba's suggestion of singing lessons, I would add sing in your school chorus and even more important for a tuba player and someone who wants to learn composition, which you mentioned....Take piano lessons!!!!!
All college music schools have some form of piano proficiency test, which you need to pass in oirder to graduate. The more you know before you go to college the better off you will be. Also for a tuba player it helps you learn theory and harmonic movement which is especially important in jazz.
