Well, your description of string coming out the bottom was along the lines of what I was thinking, except I was thinking lightweight steel cable; furthermore, if it passes through a pulley whose tangent is directly below the vent, there would be NO lateral forces. after going through the pulley, I had imagined it going back up parallel to the valve casing, where it would attach to the end of a lever opposite the spatula.

The biggest problem is that a piston has inherently more drag, so in order to translate a 1" piston movement into a 1/2" spatula movement, the buttons might be a little hard to push. Would 1" spatula movements be acceptable? I don't know.

A smaller problem is the extra moving parts that have to be lubricated and eventually replaced. although, if the buttons are left on top, the horn could always be played with them in a pinch.

Joe Baker, who thinks this is a pipe dream, but is enjoying it.
