Joe,
I have thought about this, also. One could attach a rod or cable to the bottom of the valve, running through the vent hole in the bottom valve cap. The valve stem and cap would need to be retained for a modified valve, however, because it controls the downward travel, but a new design could have the down felt/cork at the bottom of the valve, similar to the up felt/cork at the top of the valve. Other things to worry about would be keeping the vent hole in the bottom of the piston open.

Some people prefer the direct action of pistons, with no intervening mechanism, and learn to push their valves down straight enough to avoid sticking. The weight, complexity, and friction of the necessary mechanism for pull-activated pistons might make them less attractive.

But wait! How about if you fasten a string to the bottom of each piston, run the string through hole in the bottom cap, put a loop in each string, then put your fingers through the loops and play with your hands below the valves? With long enough strings, the sideways forces would be negligible, and your fingers could be positioned where ever they were comfortable. You could even fasten coins to the loops in the strings to keep the strings from cutting into your fingers. With common front-valve configurations, you might need to play with your left hand for the experiment.
