Well, the HB rotary valve in the leadpipe of my Bohm & Meinl has a .750 bore, the same as the piston valve set. I think they work well in the leadpipe when there's NO change in the bore through the valves. (remember the very popular G-50 is Bob's design) It "may" be that the oversize bore penchant for 5th valve (where 5th valve follows after the main valveset) was initially to match the bore at the taperspot where it was mounted rather than any fixed "must be x-diameter because it's 5th valve" concept. (Course, this doesn't explain why so many horns are built now with graduated bores.)

The most immediate impression of my horn is how extremely open and free-blowing it is,
maybe the 5th valve wouldn't work so good where it is if the leadpipe were smaller? I dunno.
