A couple of other posters have hit on the likely problem: what's in it for him? If he has no vision of something great that will drive him to work, he won't. Give him a reason to CARE whether he plays these things right. Maybe a more challenging ensemble of some sort, where he will be the weak player if he doesn't do it right. Maybe music that he finds more interesting. Maybe his parents know of something they'd like to reward him with if they get glowing reports from his teacher.
But it better be somthing he wants every day, or he still won't practice; he'll just be miserable after lessons because he didn't practice.
