Not sure I understand your point. You say the student was having trouble with a rhythmic concept, but he now understands it? If so, the problem's solved! If not, you may wish to teach subdivision, where you break the notes down into their shortest denominations. For example, a dotted crotchet/quaver pattern (dotted quarter/eighth) is divisable by 4: 1,2,3 on the dotted crotchet, 4 on the quaver. Feel the pulses...even play it that way: works with my students.

BTW, a lot of kids work hard in lessons, but not between them, for many reasons: other priorities (sport, TV, Nintendo, homework), lack of focus or goal, or maybe they're quite content with that level of committment! This can be improved: there's a topic for another thread!
