Like any field, there are the gearheads (I'm one of them). Technology can be fun and I assume that fun and enjoyment is part of the whole tuba experience.

On the musicality aspect, my teacher made a comment the other day about how the young kids who are coming into music today seem to be melody-starved. Part of his teaching involves being able to discover things about one's playing using melodies that are grooved into one's subconscious (e.g. Swanee River, Merrily We Roll Along, Hot Cross Buns, A Bicycle Built for Two, etc.). Quite a number of his younger students appear to be completely unacquainted with these simple songs. He thhinks that there's been a cultural break where today's parents no longer sing to their children.

I don't know how universally true this is, but it's an interesting observation.
