That's interesting and saddening. About a year ago, I asked one of the young tuba players in my area why he didn't take lessons from my teacher. He grimaced and said "all that stuff from Arban and the SINGING" (Solfege is not optional if you study with him}
I was told that Mr. Jacobs once said that if he could mandate two areas of study for players, they would be singing and drama.
Makes sense to me. (My oh my OH MY).
