i think that a bigger sound comes out of necessity. i am the only tuba in a marching band of 86 and a concert band of about the same. going into high school i had about the same sound as any middle school tuba, but the necessity of me playing loud and big and full made me try all the harder. at my all district rehersals this past year the director wasn't used to my sound and during "a copland tribute" i saw him whisper into a helper's ear, a few minutes later that helper made his way over to the tubas. he then moved the sound projecting shell out from behind me and over about 2 feet so that the other tubas had it and not me. my point (other than an amusing story) is that you can create a huge sound by having to create a huge sound. the only hard part is learning to do it and keeping your musicality at the same time. it's all in your lungs and your heart. get into what you're playing and it'll show.
