My experience with financing college is that most colleges are pretty reasonable when giving you financial aid packages. Especially if your child isn't the only one in the family going to college. As for scholarships, your school should be able to help you out some. Your guidance councilor is a valuable resource in this department as well.

As for putting "the word out to the departments," I'd suggest letting your son contact the schools. He can do this by contacting the music teachers of the schools directly, either by phone or e-mail (which are usually available on the school's website). In most cases, the teacher will be happy to answer any questions your son might have, and even be willing to listen to your son and show him around a bit.
