There is a picture of Floyd Cooley on his album "Romantic Tuba" with his Gronitz F tuba that had the fifth valve after the regular valve set. I think I also see a main tuning slide trigger on that picture. ( Left hand occupied by the fifth valve paddle)
I have a Gronitz tuba just like that, and yes the fifth valve is bigger then the other four. Actually the first valve is smaller than 2,3,and 4.
Works very well.
Come to think of it: Gronitz also made double tubas in BBb and F.
Gronitz was a one-man operation in Hamburg, Germany. The company still exists, but I think Herbert Gronitz himself is dead.
