The 3/4 and 4/4 designations are somewhat rough. The Yamaha 3/4 is a very small horn while the Rudolph Meinl 3/4 is larger than some 4/4's. The bigger horn produces a bigger tone and is desirable when it is played in a large group.

You didn't mention your son's size which could be a factor. The 3/4 is easier for a smaller person to hold and blow. He is probably playing a 3/4 now, if it is a school horn. My 13 year old plays (French) horn and still doesn't hold it quite right because of his small size.

I have not played any of the horns you mentioned. I just purchased a new horn and strongly suggest play-testing, even if it involves some travel. Look at the "music shops" heading on this site and see if any of them are close to you. Then, give them a call and see if they have anything that is appropriate, particularly in a used horn. Be patient. Ask questions. Check e-bay but use it with caution.
