Open a fakebook and start reading melodies of real songs that people know and love. Play them the way Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday would sing them. Or Tony Bennett, or BB King, or Pops, or Crosby, or Nat Cole, or....
And while you're at it, try them in different keys. You'll be amazed at what you can learn.
