In case you don't hear from any experienced professionals, here's my advice: Buy a moderately priced 4/4 instrument that will hold its value, preferably a used instrument. A Miraphone 186 or 188 sounds about right, or a Meinl-Weston 32. When you are a senior and deciding which grad school to consider, you'll be much more mature as a player and will have a much better idea of your sound concept and what you are trying to achieve. Then, you can sell this instrument for what you paid for it and buy the horn that meets your better understanding of your needs. These instruments hold their value because they have withstood the test of time.
