When we play in any given room, our various frequencies of output will set up standing waves in that room that will vary by location. As we walk through the room, the timbre of the sound will change markedly. Studios try hard to eliminate these effects, and big, live halls usually smear all these effects together with reverberation. Thus, we might well hear different frequencies from different directions.

By the way, the drill wasn't the only terrifying noise emanating from that dentist's chair.
