Along that line, you may wish to check out the Norton Anthology of Western Music. The textbooks come in two volumes and there is a set of 12 CDs (or a 'concise set' of 4) to go along with it. The texts are basically annotated scores, and the CDs consist of excellent musical examples; mostly 'standard' works of the period. The whole set would be quite expensive, of course, but it might be available at a library, especially if you're near a university with a music school. Again, this would be an excellent supplement to the Grout - you can read all you want about music history but having actual musical examples to back it up is invaluable.
