There is a very good book called "Listen", by Kerman, which includes a set of 6 CDs (great musical examples!) that covers the history of music in a good, thorough, way. It is not as scholarly (or as dry!) as the Grout, and as such, does not replace it, but is a great supplement. It is really designed as a "music appreciation" type text, but it is quite good.
