Yes, you often get what you pay for. But I suspect the high expectations of the parents in your school district had much more to do with the results than high tax dollars being spent on pro-quality instruments. Methinks you'd have gotten the same results on more modestly priced instruments.
Now, answer this: How many of those exceptional players with such clear sound concepts owned their own instruments? If the kids are able to buy their own pro-level CC tubas as freshmen and sophomores, then the well-to-do parents ought to donate those unused Rudy's to a school district with greater need, perhaps?
