York was a relatively small manufacturer. Their old factory still stands in a not-so-savory part of Grand Rapids. The company went out of business in the early seventies and the tooling for all horns has disappeared. The market for instruments was much different 30 years ago, and call for custom or pro-line instruments is not what it is today. For the most part, the York instruments were considered a grade below Conns or Kings. The York craze started in the eighties when people like Bob Rusk started rehabbing and converting old York tubas to C horns, and by that time York was long closed, with no hope of the tooling being recovered.
