Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is school district auctions. Sometimes the horns are junk and sometimes they are not. In our district each school-owned band instrument has a set lifetime of use. After that time frame we "retire" it to the wharehouse where it is auctioned off during the summer. In my 10 years at this school I have "retired" 3 old King 4 bangers with the detachable bell. They were not in bad shape but they were far from cherry. The point is they still played. Our district has since switched over to the St Petes and I can't wait for the first of those to go on auction in about 4 more years. But as a band director I have pretty good access to a horn anyway. Try checking out the local school districts. I don't know what our old Kings went for but it could not have been much.

Play low-play deep
