I hate to bust your bubble, but the ed degree will not only be required, but a graduate degree will be required by some states to teach in secondary education in the next 10 years.

Some areas, including speech therapy and some special ed fields require the masters degree as the base degree. No more bachelors degree in those fields at some universities.

After 13 years in teaching, I am embarking on my second graduate degree this summer, just to be able to advance and renew certification in the near future.

Almost nothing disgusts me more than the thought of good performers who are bad teachers going into the teaching profession. The other side of the spectrum is as true, but you only hurt yourself if you are a good teacher and a bad player trying to go into performance. In other words, if you are not the teaching type, don't go there.
