About the athleticism...

Maybe -- just maybe -- athleticism is rewarded because of, say, a hypothetical situation where the conductor keeps asking for MORE volume (for whatever perverse reason). Would you want to be responsible for hiring somebody who simply can't give enough to satisfy that conductor?

Since we have the word "athlete" now, compare this to hiring a football quarterback. Narrow it down to the last two -- both are tremendous runners, can pitch the ball with deadly accuracy, and can make long passes with equally deadly accuracy, along with having superb knowledge of the game and teamwork. But, while one can throw for 50 yards, the other can throw for 65 yards. Who would you pick?

About keeping the ego in check to play in a section --
Absolutely imperative. Really, it's as simple as that.
