All of your points are well taken. I do think that it is possible to be a conservative version of yourself and also agree that there are times where we really need to suppress our own musical egos for the good of the team. Doug Yeo wrote a great article about this aspect of the orchestral world. ( www.yeodoug.com/teamplayer.html ) I think that his article is really sensible, but is contradicted by what I see happening at orchestral auditions of all brass players, where athleticism is rewarded and ultimately hired. (Probably just sour grapes on my part!)
