Perhaps my only former student who is playing for a living now is one who I scratched my hoead over due to the fact that things came so hard and so slowly for them. I wondered just how much frustration they could endure, and I also was in awe over their commitment.

That person is today not the world's greatest tuba player, but indeed their work brought them far more ability than some with boatloads of "natural talent".

The natural state of the human brain is a state of depression. Chemical (natural, please) changes must occur for hopeful and motivational feelings to dwell therein. "Pretend" to be "up" when you are not, and soon the reality of an upbeat attitude will supplant the pretense of one. Go get 'em tiger, and do what has to be done.
