When I was in undergrad I too was really behind and had to work VERY hard to keep going. The other 2 freshman who entered with me had tons of talent and they always played better than me without really practicing where I practiced alot. However, today neither one makes a living playing the tuba. I wanted it more than they did and with the help of a great teacher and some other very supportive older students I was doing well by the time I graduated. I went to what I think is the best grad (masters) school in tuba and now I make a secure comfortable living playing the tuba. Yes, is does take a certain amount of talent but that is just the beginning. Talent won´t get you the job. Only lots of work. Keep your dream in sight and never loose track of it. Best wishes.

P.S. I should add that it is very important that you know how to practice. This is the key to any successful player.
