It depends on what you mean by "successful as a musician". When I was in college I knew a lot a very talented musicians, and it was both inspiring and humbling for me to associate with them. But in many cases their talents exceeded their love of music; very few of them are still playing today. My own modest talents have always been exceeded by my love of music. I have always paid for the groceries with money earned in music, but the cars, mortages, medical insurance, kids' tuition, etc. required me to have a day job for 35 years. (Teaching high school physics is a great hobby for any musician; I recommend it!) I am still playing a lot, practicing more, and still developing as a musician. Does that make me "successful", or "unsuccessful"?
