I own a medium-bore (the smaller of the) Hirsbrunner F piston tubas. I think it's great! The response is incredible throughout the horn and you won't believe the lower register! In fact many of us in Bobo's class here in Switzerland use these instruments, as we think that they are superior to anything else available. Yes, like any other tuba, there are intonation quirks, but I think you can work around them. Personally, I love this tuba and the only other F that I've played that even comes close is the MW 45slp. Sean has a good point in saying that it might have been a bad mouthpiece match when you tried it before. Who knows? Anyway, regarless of what you choose, make sure you play one before you buy one... and if that means going up to Michigan, there you go. You seem to be on the right track, so good luck and happy hunting!
