I remember that concert! At least I think I do. It was in 1986, at the University of Texas at Austin. And Sumner was playing on his Miraphone CC 186(?) that he used to win the Pittsburgh audition, or so it looked like to me. If I remember correctly, that was the conference that Philip Catalinet showed up to and Sumner did an impromptu rendition of the 2nd movement of the Vaughan-Williams to start the recital in honor of the special guest from across the pond, who was in the audience. I remember that conference well because that was the first time I had performed the Todd Fiegel arrangement of the silent film score, Celluloid Tubas. What a great piece!
