All I can suggest is to take in an identical (sanitary, for your sake of course) 24AW mouthpiece and play the Bb for him correctly. Let him listen and do, and perhaps he will speed up his air to imitate the correct sound without a lot of technical explanation from you about "support", etc. which usually doesn't "click" with kids.

If, however, YOU ALSO produce an "A" (instead of a Bb) and you think you are blowing the thing about as "correctly" as anyone could, make sure there isn't an old pair of gloves, dead cat, etc. shoved down the horn (??). MANY students problems are related to (often DUMB) problems with their equipment, and quite a few teachers don't get quite down far enough "into the trenches" to actually blow the dang thing and see if it works right when THEY play it. (no reflection on you, Doug, just a general observation about problems that kids bring into my brass and woodwinds music store)
