I occasionally send my instrument(s) (when I need to fly to one of those western U.S. jazz festivals or whatever) via Greyhound Package Express, a day prior to my own departure.
They just are not in a hurry, so NO THROWING occurs, and nothing (due to the "bus" thing) ever falls more than two feet.
Perhaps I should demonstrate a bit more discretion than this, but if I show up during the correct shift and tip the counter person, I often seem to get an outstanding rate.
Its nice to be a tuba/bass (don't forget the heavy little Polytone amp) player and travel only with "carry-on" luggage. The guys in the band never seem to mind stopping off at the bus station to and from the hotel on the arrival and departure days, respectively.
