I'm still talking about a rotary valve mechanism here. All I'm suggesting is that the paddle pivot point be moved to be under the hand and that the paddles be reversed so that they follow the arc of the finger. The rest of the linkage can be more or less unchanged, with the possible exception that the linkage will be "pulled" instead of "pushed" by the paddle mechanism. We're not talking about an added level of complexity here.

Pistons have their own problems; their motion is straight-line, whereas the path of your finger isn't. Probably one of the reasons that valve buttons wear and valves jam.

As far as preferring one type of valve over the other--I don't; I'm about 30-70 in my collection with pistons dominating, mostly because I prefer "American" sounding instruments. If they came with rotaries, I'd have more rotaries.
