Rick, this may be the first time I've thought of an engineering solution before you! The key would be to put the pivot just ABOVE the knuckles, with curved levers above the fingers and rings at the ends of the levers that you would put your fingers into. It'd be kind of like putting on a baseball glove (on the wrong hand :). The rings could be re-positionable by sliding up and down the lever and securing with a set-screw. As an additional benefit, you would be able to push the valves up if you need greater speed of if they stick!
