I completely agree with the comment about some American bass trombonists. I have been lucky enough to play with several very talented ones who know what it means to play in an ensemble. but I once listened to a major orchestra where the bass bone player overblew the entire concert and was way out of balance with the other trombones and tuba. The next day one of the trumet players commented to me how 'great' it was that the bass trombone really blew away the tuba (the tubist was an excellent musician with a 6/4 horn.)
I have also listened to recordings of both European and American orchestras perform the same works, and some of the American renditions sounded almost like bass trombone concertos - the European ones were more balanced and 'easier' to listen to. Again, MOST bass trombone players are excellent, but more than a few need to be tapped on their shoulder and told to stop overblowing and play with, not over, the ensemble.

Sorry for being anonymous, but I currently have inadequate life insurance.
