I'd thought of that, but I'm concerned that clamping the thumbring right on the rather fragile tubing rather than on the beefier ferrule could lead to disaster. B&H is reportedly addressing the problem of the awkward 983 thumbring and one hopes they may eventually come out with one that works a little better. I love the idea of an adjustable ring but only if it can be adjusted to fit me!
I'm seriously considering letting my brass tech take a hacksaw to the existing thumbring and re-braze it so that the ring is offset a comfortable amount from the clamp.
Too bad that the thumbring is my biggest problem on an otherwise wonderful instrument. For now, I'll just leave it off like many other owners...
