Because auditions are a pain in the a$$ for all involved, so if they can hire a young stud that will play for 43 years, why not avoid auditioning another tubist for those 43 years? Speaking only of orchestras where a player would be daft to leave for another gig.
Just a guess.
But it seems that committees are deciding that an audition every 10 years or so isn't so bad.
