Steve's right. There's no substitute for experience. Real experience. It's that way in every aspect of life. Youthful exuberance is great, but it is even more valuable when coupled with (or tempered with) experience. It could be compared to the argument of idealism vs. realism. Idealism should be tempered with realism. Paraphrasing (loosely) Winston Churchill, "A twenty year old man who is conservative has no heart. A forty year old man who is a liberal has no brain." Agree or not, the point is that you grow and change as you age. Life experience teaches us lessons we can't learn anywhere else. Nailing excerpts and solos in a practice room, in and of itself, does not a great musician make. Listening to thousands of recordings won't do it either. You eventually have to DO IT. That's where the real learning begins.
