I haven't personally tried both, but I can tell you from hearing many people play on each of these that they are very different tubas. Both seem to be a little inconsistent from one horn to another(i.e., this Yorkbrunner might not be as good as that one, etc.). I have heard several different folks use a Nirschl in orchestra, but it doesn't seem to have the color of the HB-50, nor the carrying power. Some HB-50's are lemons, but some just light up when you play them- no overly dark, fuzzy tone. Both are pretty horns, and pretty expensive, but I think that if you can find a good Yorkbrunner (not necessarily new), then that's probably going to be better than any of the Nirschls. Of course, this is just my personal preference on sound color- you may think differently. Good luck!
